Good Hotel Guide Review

Good Hotel Guide

Homey and faintly bohemian, the Lowther family’s Grade I listed Elizabethan mansion is surrounded by terraces, topiary and lawns. Guests approach the house, which was built around a 14th-century pele tower, through a stone gateway; inside, Charles and Juno Lowther have redecorated with a mix of antique and contemporary, ethnic and English furnishings. It is ‘a hotel of character’, say pleased visitors. Three reception rooms are filled with books, paintings, family photographs. Staff are ‘friendly and efficient’. The ‘pretty’ bedrooms are individually decorated; the best, in the pele tower, have an antique bath and views of the gardens, fells and the River Lowther. In the restaurant, chef Richard Swale makes abundant use of produce from the kitchen garden, the Lowther estate and local suppliers, then gives his ‘seriously good’ dishes an exotic twist. A typical dinner menu might include guineafowl, ramson; hoggart loin, spiced lentils, mibuna, goat’s cheese. A converted barn houses a café with a wood-fired pizza oven; animal trails around the gardens introduce younger guests to shorthorn cattle, boer goats and ducks.
