Good Hotel Guide Review

Good Hotel Guide

With ‘no rules – just plenty of warm, friendly staff, and wonderful food and service’, Wendy and Simon Bennett’s Victorian fantasy castle continues to win rave reviews. ‘The magic of the castle lies in its owners. They’re passionate about it, and rightly so.’ In ‘lovely’ grounds, the hotel has ‘a feeling of indulgence, without any ceremony – you’re made to feel at home’. There are ‘warm fires’, a ‘relaxing’ lounge with a grand piano and music books, a cinema complete with popcorn; four nights a week, a dinner menu, ‘sensibly limited in choice’, is ‘attractively served’ and communally – some say rowdily – eaten. (Platters of local meats and cheeses are served on other nights.) ‘We all made friends over dinner.’ Choose among eclectic bedrooms, each more characterful than the other (though a guest this year thought housekeeping could be stepped up). ‘Ours was beautifully decorated in period style, with a huge four-poster bed and an open fire; books and a chesterfield armchair in an anteroom; our very own turrets.’ ‘Breakfast is a nicely laid-back start to the day.’ (Kris Didymus, Mike Long, and others)
