Good Hotel Guide Review

Good Hotel Guide

Set against a backdrop of mature trees, this ‘lovely’ white-painted Georgian house was called Lakefield when Beatrix Potter first spent a summer here in 1896. She sketched fungi and painted the view we share today, of Esthwaite Water. For the past 14 years, Richard and his wife Margaret have been ‘hospitable’, ‘charming’ owners whose guest house has ‘much to admire’ (not least the host’s ‘dry sense of humour’). Sadly Margaret died recently, but she will be remembered by many of her guests. ‘It is excellent, with first-class food, wonderful views and a pleasant country house atmosphere,’ says a Guide reader on his eighth visit. Another frequenter writes: ‘We’ve stayed here many times and, unbelievably, the food improves each time. Margaret and Richard make you very comfortable.’ Ask for one of the refurbished bedrooms: pretty and traditionally furnished, each is ‘immaculate’, with a modern bathroom. In the evening, sample Richard Lee’s five-course, daily-changing menu of seasonal English dishes, perhaps breast of duckling, ginger and honey sauce; Yorkshire rhubarb and ginger crumble. Breakfast is ‘a treat’, with freshly baked croissants, freshly squeezed juices, local sausages, kipper or smoked haddock. (Eileen and George Goodbody, Ken Smart, and others)
