Good Hotel Guide Review

Good Hotel Guide

Surrounded by ancient fruit orchards and mature woodlands, quiet pathways and open lawns, Jean-Pierre Mifsud’s 18th-century manor house in the Taw valley is ‘a very special place’, say Guide readers this year. ‘An oasis of calm and tranquillity’, it’s just the spot for guests in search of ‘comfort and relaxation’. The manor once belonged to Henry VIII; the history of the estate from its monastic days is told in murals on drawing room and dining room walls (with a certain artistic licence – spot the king and his croquet mallet). Choose among spacious bedrooms and suites, each individually styled, all with fresh fruit, mints and home-made shortbread. Victorian-inspired King’s Nympton has a four-poster bed, the Manor suite a mirrored canopy and a marble-finish bath. In the restaurant, chef/manager Richie Herkes’s seasonal menus – including, perhaps, slow-cooked pork belly, apple and black pudding gateau, honey-roasted parsnip purée – are praised for their ‘balance of ingredients and flavour’. ‘The tasting menu is not to be missed – the best we’ve had.’ The Lake, Llangammarch Wells, Wales (see entry), is under the same ownership. (Mary Coles). This hotel is a member of Pride of Britain hotels.
