Good Hotel Guide Review

Good Hotel Guide

Chris Daly’s 18th-century mansion on Dartmoor makes for a ‘friendly, relaxing’ hotel, its ‘delightful’ staff and ‘laid-back’ attitude attracting many return guests. (It’s said that Arthur Conan Doyle was inspired to write The Hound of the Baskervilles while staying at the house; today, better-behaved dogs are made very welcome, with all manner of treats.) In 2016, regular Guide correspondents on a second visit found ‘comfy’ armchairs and an open fire in the lounge – ‘lovely and warm on a cold March day’. Bedrooms, named after local tors, are light, airy, beautifully furnished. ‘Ours (Yestor) was large, with plenty of storage space, and stunning views across Dartmoor from the two armchairs.’ In the dining room, ‘gone are the white tablecloths and china; in are paint-distressed tables and pottery plates, to encourage a more relaxed feel’. Dogs and their owners may eat in the bar; in fine weather, take drinks and meals on the terrace. ‘The food was heavenly – sea bass and sole cooked to perfection.’ At breakfast, ‘plenty of high-quality options’ accompany the leaf tea (‘hurrah!’) and home-baked bread.
