Good Hotel Guide Review

Good Hotel Guide

Surrounded by verdant countryside with ample opportunity for rambles, this former coaching inn has been run by Janet and Edward Boynton for more than 40 of its 200 years. It is an ‘unpretentious’ place, say admirers with affection; ‘genial and affable’, the Boyntons are ‘hard-working, hands-on’ hosts. The ‘classic’ pub is ‘old-fashioned in the nicest sense, all stained beams and brasses’; the library theme (‘a huge bookcase crammed with books’) creates a homey atmosphere. A ‘terrific’ menu, displayed on blackboards, is ‘promptly and attractively served’, perhaps including ‘a flavoursome salad with delicate balsamic dressing; a seafood pancake, characterised by beautifully smoked haddock’. Home-made bread rolls are served warm, with ‘proper’ butter. Need advice on drinks? ‘The owner clearly knows his wine.’ Up ‘steep’ stairs, retire to one of the ‘simple’, ‘basic’ bedrooms – they’re ‘excellent value, if a little dated’. ‘We slept well – even with the windows open, it was quiet.’ The cooked options at breakfast are of ‘excellent’ quality; there is also a rudimentary buffet. Easy access to the A1(M), ‘though the motorway is out of sight and sound’. (RG, and others)
